TOKYO: A powerful earthquake jolted the central Japan prefecture of Ishikawa on the Sea of Japan coast Sunday afternoon but caused no tsunami, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The temblor struck around 3:08 p.m., and registered lower 6 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale of zero to 7 at Suzu City, lower 5 at Noto Town and 4 in Wajima City, all in Ishikawa Prefecture, according to the agency.

The quake, with an estimated magnitude of 5.2, occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers in the prefecture’s Noto region, the agency said.

The earthquake registered lower 5 on the Japanese scale in the Ishikawa town of Noto and 4 in the city of Wajima in the prefecture. The two municipalities are also in the peninsula.

Chief Cabinet Secretary HIROKAZU Matsuno told a press conference minutes after the earthquake that “there are no abnormalities in the nuclear facilities in that region, including the Shika nuclear power plant.”

Utilities and transportation services are running normal in the prefecture, officials said noting that no damage has been reported immediately as a result of the shaking.
