TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe asked employers on Thursday to raise pay in "shunto" annual wage talks next spring.

"I'm expecting very much," Abe said in a speech at a meeting of the Japan Business Federation, or Keidanren, calling for a seventh straight year of pay increase.

A wage increase of as much as 12 pct was recorded when the last Tokyo Olympics took place in 1964, he said. The Japanese capital hosts the Olympics again next year.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Hiroaki Nakanishi, chairman of Keidanren, the largest employers' group in Japan, said it is committed to maintaining momentum for higher pay.

Still, Nakanishi said Keidanren has no plans to issue any numerical goal for a pay increase. "We want employers to raise wages in line with their respective business strategies," he said.
