TOKYO: The steering committees of both chambers of Japan’s parliament will meet Thursday to question Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio about the state funeral for former Prime Minister ABE Shinzo, set for Sept. 27.

Media opinion polls show that the public is divided over the state funeral. The meetings come as opposition parties demanded that Kishida appear before parliament to speak about the legal basis of the event.

Kenta Izumi, leader of the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, tweeted Wednesday that he opposes a state funeral that lacks the legal basis.

The government expects around 6,000 people to attend the state funeral for Abe, expected to cost around 1.66 billion yen.

Abe died after being shot while giving a campaign speech in the western Japan city of Nara on July 8.

Kishida said at a press conference on July 14 that a state funeral would be held for Abe. This marks the second state funeral for a former Japanese prime minister in post-World War II history following Shigeru Yoshida in 1967.

During Thursday’s parliamentary meetings, opposition lawmakers are also planning to grill Kishida about links between members of his ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the controversial religious group known as the Unification Church that have come to light since Abe’s death.
