Kishida, WTO head pledge to work together in tough economic climate

TOKYO: Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio met with World Trade Organization Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonio-Iweala in Tokyo on Wednesday and stated that Japan wants to continue making strong contributions to WTO discussions.

According to Japan’s Foreign Ministry, Kishida “appreciated the outcomes achieved at the WTO’s twelfth ministerial conference (MC12),” the WTO’s Ministerial Conference that took place in June this year.

Okonjo-Iweala stated that the WTO is faced with various challenges and emphasized that it must achieve its proposed outcomes. She stressed the importance of cooperation among its members and expressed her expectations for Japan as it assumes the G7 Presidency next year.

Kishida and Okonjo-Iweala noted that the environment surrounding international trade has been changing but confirmed their intention to continue to work closely for MC13 to enable the WTO to achieve its aims.
