TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio and his Greek counterpart, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on Monday affirmed the importance of maintaining the international order based on the rule of law, apparently referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s military threat.

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting at the Japanese prime minister’s office in Tokyo, Kishida said that a free and open maritime order is a common interest for Japan and Greece, which are both maritime nations. Mitsotakis said that both countries share similar challenges.

In a joint statement, the two leaders criticized Russia’s military aggression and underscored the importance of the international community working together.

Kishida and Mitsotakis also said their nations will cooperate to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

They also agreed to elevate Japan-Greece ties to a strategic partnership.
