TOKYO: Parliamentarians in Japan on Tuesday debated Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio’s planned defense bill, with several taking issue on some of the bill’s outlines.

Politicians from the Democratic Constitutional Party, the Reiwa Shinsengumi Party, the Japanese Communist Party and the Social Democrat Party addressed the government’s planned deterrence strategy and the simulated bombardments of the Nansei islands.

SUGIO Hideya, a member of the House of Councilors, asked about the potential consequences if a missile attack targeted nuclear power plants in Japan.

IHA Yoichi, the former mayor of Ginowan in Okinawa expressed concern about Okinawa’s situation in the event of a conflict with China. A large part of Okinawa is occupied by U.S. military forces.

NAGAYAMA Shigeki, a professor of Constitutional Law at Tokai University, expressed concern about threats to the constitutionality of planned defense rules that could impede “the right of Japanese people to have a peaceful life.” He expressed concern about the state’s possible use of big business to accelerate war efforts.

He told Arab News Japan that hosting the next G7 summit in Japan-and inviting the Secretary General of NATO could lead to Japan violating the pacifist spirit of its Constitution and even result in World War III.

At the conclusion of the public information session, the head of a think tank advocating an approach based on diplomacy as a means of peacefully settling conflicts asked the assembly to start a dialogue with Washington.

In a document released to the public, the New Diplomacy Initiative think tank hopes that Japan will comply with its objectives of promoting peace but thinks that a strategy of deterrence could lead Japan to the path of war with disastrous consequences.

The Article 9 Protection Liaison Committee recalled the preamble to the Japanese Constitution that states Japan will never repeat the horrors of war.

Under pressure from opposition groups, the Japanese government has already withdrawn the paragraph on pre-emptive attack capabilities of enemy bases that not only contradicts the spirit of the Japanese Constitution, but also contradicts the charter of the United Nations.
