TOKYO: An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale struck near Chichijima remote island south of Tokyo on Tuesday afternoon.

The quake had a seismic intensity of 3 on the small island, which is situated 1,000 km south of the Japanese capital in the Pacific Ocean and is administer as part of Tokyo.

There was no danger of a tsunami, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The island has seen a series of earthquakes in the last few days and registered two earthquakes of at least 5.0 on the Richter Scale at the end of March, leading to concerns about a larger earthquake.

A subsequent earthquake registered 4.1 later on Tuesday.

Chichijima Island, which means in English, “Father Island”, is the largest of the Ogasawara Islands. The mountainous island is covered in subtropical forest, white sand beaches and steep rocky cliffs.
