TOKYO: “The situation on the Korean Peninsula is on the brink of an explosion,” according to a report released by the (North) Korean Central News Agency on May 19.

Referring to joint military exercises by “the puppet belligerents of the US imperialists and South Korea,” the report says, “The enemy’s war-mongering madness has reached a point where it cannot be overlooked.”

The report cited the use of the U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Nimitz and Aegis destroyers, as well as B52 bombers and F35 stealth fighters that flew over Korea “to cause a war commotion” with what it said were the largest such exercises in history.

Stating that “the situation on the Korean Peninsula has become even more precarious,” the report also condemned the “Washington Declaration” as an “aggressive military oppression of our Republic by the US imperialists and their puppet regimes.” It referred to South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol as “a rebel who has been carried away by the heat of war,” and who is leading “the thugs of the puppet army.”

With even larger exercises planned for later this month and June, the North says it is “closely monitoring every military move by hostile forces that seriously undermines and threatens the security environment on the Korean Peninsula and in the region.”

In conclusion, the report states: “Analysts of world affairs say that the United States has systematically carried out various provocative actions against the DPRK and Washington is at the root of the danger of nuclear war due to escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The reality clearly shows who is seriously threatening the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula and the region.”

“It is the legitimate right of sovereign states to equip themselves with stronger and more powerful means of self-defense in the face of present and future threats.”
