TOKYO:An earthquakewith a maximum seismic intensity of 4 hit Kanagawa Prefectureto the west of Tokyo on Thursday evening.

The quake registered 4.4 on the Richter Scaleat a depth of 10 kilometersin Nakai Town, which is midway between Yokohama and Mt. Fuji.

Alarger level 5 earthquake struck in the same area six days earlier.

The quake shook buildings inYokohamaandOdawaraand wasalso felt strongly in Tokyo.

Bullet trainservices were temporarily suspended on lines between Shin-Yokohama and Atami from8:20 p.m., but were resumedsoon after following safety checks.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has called for people to bealerttothe possibility of furtherearthquakeswith a possible intensity of 5.

No tsunami alert was issued.
