TOKYO: Tokyo and Beirut have agreed on the importance of resolving issues related to former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn's escape from Japan to Lebanon, Japanese State Minister of Justice Hiroyuki Yoshiie said Tuesday.

Yoshiie made the comments at a press conference in Tokyo after returning from a trip to Beirut where he met with senior Lebanese government officials.

He said he and the Lebanese officials have agreed to work on the issues at the working level.

"I told the Lebanese side that Ghosn should face trial in Japan, and I was able to win understanding," Yoshiie said.

He did not discuss Beirut's response to Tokyo's request that Lebanon hand over Ghosn to Japan.

In Beirut on Monday, Yoshiie held talks with Lebanese President Michel Aoun.

Ghosn fled Japan to Lebanon late last year while out on bail awaiting trial over alleged financial misconduct.
