The US has urged its citizens in Iran to leave the country immediately amid escalating unrest.
“Leave Iran now,” the State Department-run Virtual Embassy Tehran said in a security alert on Monday, urging Americans to plan to depart without assistance from the US government.
The alert warned of escalating protests, possible violence, arrests, internet disruptions and increased security measures.
It said showing links to the US could lead to detention, as Iran does not recognise dual nationality and treats US-Iranian dual citizens solely as Iranian nationals.
US citizens were advised to leave by land, including via Armenia or Turkiye, if safe to do so. Those unable to leave were urged to remain in secure locations, avoid demonstrations, keep a low profile and ensure access to food, water and medication.
The United States has no diplomatic or consular relations with Iran. The Swiss Embassy in Tehran acts as the US protecting power in emergencies.
