DAVOS: Iran is no longer the “bully of the Middle East” because of US military strikes against Tehran’s nuclear facilities, President Donald Trump told the World Economic Forum on Wednesday.
“If we didn’t take them out, they would have had a nuclear weapon within two months,” Trump said after delivering a wide ranging address in Davos.
The US president said the strikes in June paved the way for the Gaza peace deal in September that ended Israel’s two-year war on the territory.
But he urged Hamas to comply with the agreement and give up its weapons or risk being “blown away.”
Most of the leader’s speech was dominated by Greenland, and he renewed his push to seize control of the autonomous territory from NATO ally Denmark.
“It’s the United States alone that can protect this giant mass of land, this giant piece of ice, develop it and improve it,” Trump said. “That’s the reason I’m seeking immediate negotiations to once again discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States.”
However, he said he would not use force to take control of Greenland.
“We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force where we would be, frankly, unstoppable, but I won’t do that. Okay. Now everyone’s saying, Oh, good. That’s probably the biggest statement I made, because people thought I would use force,” he said.
“I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force.”
Trump added that he would meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Wednesday, adding that he believed both the Ukrainian leader and Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to end the nearly four-year-old war.
Trump said he was also dealing with Putin, and would meet with Zelenskiy on the sidelines of WEF.
