CAIRO: Egypt’s Foreign Ministry has condemned Israel’s demolition of over 70 homes and buildings in the Palestinian village of Humsa Al-Baqai’a in the occupied West Bank, which displaced about 80 people, including children.

“This act is a clear violation of international legitimacy and the decisions of international humanitarian law,” the ministry said in a statement.

“These practices exacerbate the difficult humanitarian conditions afflicting the Palestinian people, and the challenges related to the spread of the coronavirus, in addition to what they represent as an obstacle to the two-state solution and the chances of reaching a comprehensive and just peace and achieving stability in the region.”

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said: “This demolition, which is the largest of its kind against our people in the Jordan Valley, constitutes a new Israeli breach, a violation of international law, an additional challenge to us and the international community, and a systematic destruction of the possibility of establishing an independent state of Palestine on the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital.”

Shtayyeh demanded that international partners intervene to stop the displacement of the inhabitants of Humsa Al-Baqai’a and dozens of similar communities, and to protect the Palestinian people from Israel’s continuous violations against them. He said Israel acted when attention is focused on the US election so as to cover up its crime.
