TOKYO:  Lebanese legal authorities  have not started their investigation into the escape of Former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn, who jumped bail and fled Japan to Lebanon late last year ahead of a planned trial over his alleged financial misconduct, the top prosecutor in Lebanon told Kyodo news.

Ghassan Oweidat, Lebanon’s Prosecutor General said in an exclusive interview with Kyodo News published on Friday that formal documents from Japan concerning Ghosn’s extradition have still not been received by Lebanese authorities despite a request made through Interpol for Japan to forward the legal documents targeting the former Nissan CEO.

Lebanon maintains that Ghosn entered the country legally.

Oweidat also told Kyodo News that Lebanese prosecutors have met with Ghosn three times, however, none of the meetings were related to Japan.

Lebanon authorities reportedly confiscated Ghosn’s passport although has the right to freedom of movement within the borders of the country.
