Arab News, Riyadh

The Arab coalition said on Tuesday it had released 200 Houthi prisoners to support peace efforts aimed at ending the nearly five-year war in Yemen.

The coalition spokesman Col. Turki Al-Maliki also said in a statement that it would ease restrictions on Yemeni airspace to allow flights out of the Houthi-held capital, Sanaa, to transport people requiring medical treatment abroad.

The statement also said that the move was aimed at paving the way for a larger and long-delayed prisoner swap agreed upon last year.

The coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015 against the Iranian-backed Houthi movement that ousted the internationally recognised government from power in Sanaa.

The two sides signed a UN peace deal in Sweden last December but have yet to implement it.

On Tuesday, the Houthi militia welcomed the announcement of the coalition's decision to release 200 prisoners and organizing flights to transport patients from Sana'a.
