In a bid to address the solid waste management challenges in Lebanon, the Japanese government has extended its support through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

The assistance, channeled through the Lebanese Organization for Studies and Training (LOST), includes the provision of three waste collection trucks to four municipalities in Baalbek-Hermel, benefiting more than 41,000 residents and contributing to better public health conditions.

A ceremony marking the hand-over of the waste collection vehicles took place on May 23 in the presence of the Japanese Ambassador to Lebanon MAGOSHI Masayuki, Governor of Baalbek-Hermel, Bashir Khodr, and General Manager of LOST Dr. Rami Lakkis.

The ceremony commenced with the national anthems of Japan and Lebanon, fostering a spirit of cooperation.

During his speech, Magoshi emphasized Japan’s contribution to sustainable and effective waste management solutions in Lebanon. He also highlighted the importance of community engagement and the active participation of individuals for the continued success of the project.

Expressing gratitude, Khodr thanked Japan for its generous support to the municipalities and drew attention to the urgent need for increased assistance in waste management in the region, seeking continued support to address the growing demands.

Lakkis expressed sincere appreciation for Japan’s support to critical sectors in Lebanon during “critical times.” He commended Japan’s unwavering dedication to improving the living conditions of vulnerable populations, hoping for the continuation of the partnership with Japan.

The provision of waste collection trucks is expected to significantly enhance the solid waste management capabilities of the four municipalities in Baalbek-Hermel, which will enable residents to experience improved public health conditions and a cleaner environment.
