RIYADH: Jordan’s King Abdullah welcomed Saudi Arabia’s firm and supportive positions on the rights of the Palestinian people during a phone call with the Kingdom’s crown prince.
Wednesday’s call between Jordan’s king and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman came after President Donald Trump called for transferring all Palestinians from Gaza so the US could take over the devastated territory and rebuild it for others during a Tuesday press conference at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“The US will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it, too. We’ll own it,” he said at the conference.
King Abdullah and Prince Mohammed discussed regional developments and exchanged views on the latest developments and efforts made to achieve security and stability, Saudi Press Agency reported.
In a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas earlier on Wednesday, King Abdullah rejected “any attempts” to take control of Palestinian territories and displace people.
Saudi Arabia issued a statement in the early hours of Wednesday, following Trump’s statement, affirming that the Kingdom’s position on the establishment of a Palestinian state is firm and unwavering. The statement rejected any “attempts to displace the Palestinian people from their land.”
“Saudi Arabia will continue its relentless efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel without that,” the statement said.
“Achieving lasting and just peace is impossible without the Palestinian people obtaining their legitimate rights in accordance with international resolutions, as has been previously clarified to both the former and current US administrations,” it added.
