DUBAI: The Japanese pavilion came back for the 25th edition of Gulfood in the UAE from Feb. 16 – 21, with many Japanese participants aiming to make their products available in the region.

Supported by the Japan External Trade Organization in Dubai (JETRO), the Japanese pavilion featured various foods and beverages from over 30 exhibitors, including big brands such as Kewpie, San A 21 Co., Shibanuma Soy Sauce International and Daiichi Foods, Kaneku Co.

Toshiya Sorimachi, Director of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries & Food at JETRO Dubai said: “The Japanese Pavilion has been participating in Gulfood every year.”

“Japanese food has a different taste to foods from other countries. The feedback we got from people who tried the food and beverages at the event were positive,” Sorimachi said. “We look forward to getting more suggestions so that we can make food and beverage standards suitable for the people of the Middle East.”

Manager of the overseas sales department at Kewpie Corporation, Hiroshi Yamashita, said that there were two main objectives to participating at Gulfood.

“First, we wanted to get people feedback of our products & to spread our products around the Middle East region,” Yamashita said. “We wanted people the tell us the difference between our mayonnaise products from other brands in terms of taste and quality as well getting good evaluation from the people of the Middle East.”

According to Toshiji Katoh, International Sales Manager at Kaneku Co.,Ltd, it was the organization’s third year participating in the event.

“We are introducing frozen, pure Wasabi paste from Japan. Japanese wasabi has a unique taste compared to the ones from other countries like China and South Korea,” Katoh said.

“We are looking forward to expand our products in the Middle East so that more people can taste the real Wasabi flavor,” Katoh added.

Hideatsu Shibanuma, the Eighteenth Head of Shibanuma family & president of Shibanuma Soy Sauce International said: “Our company provides kinds of soy sauces that are being used by some famous Japanese restaurants in Dubai.”

“Our hope is to open a soy sauce factory next year in Dubai so that we can manufacture High quality products & expand it in the Middle East region,” Shibanuma added.

Hiroko Yamada, Director of Sales at Daiichi Foods Co.,Ltd. said during their participation at Gulfood last year, the company was able to find a distributor in Dubai to have their products available in some GCC countries.

“Many people love our mochi. They are available in seven unique flavors and we are looking forward to get more retailers for our products.”
