Japanese content creator Navito Halal is bridging the gap with his innovative approach sharing resources for Muslims navigating Japan, from halal restaurants to prayer spaces.
Navito gained over a million social media followers thanks to his unique content.
“Initially, I had no intention of becoming a content creator,” Navito told Arab News Japan. “My primary mission was to make the world more Muslim-friendly. I manage Halal Navi, Japan’s largest user-generated platform for Muslims to find halal restaurants and prayer spaces. But during my studies in Malaysia, I saw how my Muslim friends struggled with food options while visiting Japan. That inspired me to start sharing helpful information.”
What began as a personal project in March 2023 grew into a significant platform. “Within six months, I reached 500,000 followers, and by one year and two months, I surpassed one million,” Navito said.
Navito’s commitment to serving the Muslim community prompted him to delve deeper into Islamic culture. “Although I experienced Ramadan and prayer in Malaysia, my serious study began six months after starting my activities,” he explained.
Despite his growing knowledge, challenges remain. “Understanding the Quran’s 1,400 years of history and culture was daunting. I repeatedly sought guidance from Imams until I understood,” he said, adding that he plans to study Arabic.
“Japanese food often contains non-halal ingredients like emulsifiers or lard, making recommendations difficult,” Navito said. “I’m working on projects to support more halal restaurants, but progress has been slow. Still, I’m determined to find solutions.”
Navito also highlighted broader issues facing Japan’s Muslim community including affordable halal food, prayer spaces, Islamic education and finding a spouse.
Navito credits Japanese culture for shaping his perspective. “The concept of omotenashi, or hospitality, inspires me. It’s about anticipating needs and offering genuine care,” he said.
He’s also drawn life lessons from anime.
“Naruto taught me that challenges are proof you’re pursuing a goal. When I started, many doubted a non-Muslim could support the Muslim community, but like Naruto, I persisted.”
In the coming years, Navito plans to collaborate with local governments to promote rural areas as Muslim-friendly tourism destinations. He’s also eager to visit Saudi Arabia, following trips to the UAE and Uzbekistan in 2023.
