The 59 feet tall Gundam at the Gundam Factory Yokohama Complex is complete after being in the development since 2014.
The Gundam is not only impressive in size, its underlying mechanical framework also enables it to exercise movement in its arms and legs.
Its completion was celebrated on July 29, with a ceremony involving Shinto priests who blessed the structure’s head in what is known as a Jotishiki ritual– a roof-laying ceremony typically performed during the construction of a new building to pray for its safety.
After the ceremony, the 55,000-pound head was placed onto the body within view of the Yokohama Yamashita Pier.
The life-like, RX-78 Gundam was scheduled to be officially unveiled at the grand opening in October, but it has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
