RIYADH: Abu Dhabi’s ADNOC Logistics and Services has taken delivery of its third very large crude carrier that uses eco-friendly liquefied natural gas as one of the fuel sources.

Arzanah marks the third vessel out of four LNG dual-fuel VLCCs handed over in the current year.

The logistics major received two VLCCs in June and July. It expects delivery of the fourth in the final quarter.

Due to its utilization of an LNG dual-fuel engine, the newly constructed VLCC fleet is recognized as among the most ecologically effective VLCCs currently active.

According to an ADNOC’s statement on Abu Dhabi’s stock exchange, the company has dedicated around $2 billion for the construction of environmentally friendly vessels and has successfully decreased the carbon intensity of its fleet by more than 20 percent between 2018 and 2022.

It is expected that these vessels will engage in spot market trading and are being constructed by Hanwha Ocean, previously recognized as Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, at the Okpo Shipyard situated on Geoje Island, South Korea.

With a length of 336 meters and a deadweight of 300,000 metric tons, the VLCC Arzanah is built for long journeys that transport crude to consumers all over the world. Each trip can carry almost 2 million barrels of crude.

In June last year, ADNOC opted to buy three more LNG tankers in order to meet the rising demand, according to Emirates News Agency.

When compared to the company’s current fleet, which has a capacity of 137,000 cubic meters, each of these vessels will have a capacity of 175,000 cubic meters, giving them more space.

In April 2022, the company signed an agreement for the construction of two LNG vessels at the Jiangnan Shipyard in China. The vessels are expected to join the company’s fleet in 2025.

According to a company statement, these will be a lot bigger than the vessels in the existing fleet and equipped with cutting-edge technology to boost efficiency and lower emissions.

Each of the ships will carry enough LNG to power 45,000 homes for a year.
