TOKYO: People with impaired vision often need more than one pair of glasses for different purposes. Now, a Tokyo-based start-up company has produced a pair of auto-focusing eyewear that adjusts to myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia or any combination thereof.

ViXion01, the next-generation eyewear, features an auto-focus function that measures the distance to what you are looking at with a sensor and instantly changes the shapes and thickness of the lenses according to the distance.

When the company conducted crowdfunding in June 2023, more than 425 million Japanese yen (about 3 million US dollars) was raised, substantially outperforming their initial target.

In situations where the eyes are heavily used, such as reading, working on smartphones or PCs, or doing detailed handwork like plastic models, electronics, or crafts, ViXion01 provides the optimal viewing experience.

“Let’s say someone is playing the guitar and needs to look at the score and the strings one after another; the focus will automatically change to help them do so,” says Taku NONAKA, Global Business Lead at ViXion.

After the initial setup, the lenses take care of the rest.

Regarding its design, the eyewear has a somewhat futuristic look, and the lenses may be somewhat small. As new designs and lenses are already being developed, the product will be more comfortable to wear and provide larger field of vision.

The eyewear, containing computer chips, weighs only about 50g. It can be charged via a USB-C port and ViXion says the charge can last for about 10 hours of continuous use.
