TOKYO: The price of regular gasoline in Japan has risen to its highest price in 17 months, largely due to a reduction in subsidies.
According to the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, the national average retail price of regular gasoline as of January 20 was 185.10 yen ($1.19) per liter, 4.40 yen higher than the previous week.
It marked the second consecutive week of price increases. The government has been providing subsidies to suppress the rise in gasoline prices, but these have been reduced over the last month.
Last week, the subsidy was reduced by 5 yen, which had an immediate impact. The government said it will evaluate the possibility of further reductions.
