TOKYO: Japan’s Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday that its 2024 Official Development Assistance (ODA), as published by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), amounted to $16.8 billion, down 14.4 percent from the previous year.
This puts Japan in fourth place among the 32 member countries of the OECD Development Assistance Committee, behind the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
In yen terms, the figure was 2.54 trillion yen, a drop of 7.8 percent from the previous year. The Foreign Ministry explained that the decrease was caused in part by the weak yen.
The total amount of ODA by the 32 DAC member countries (not including the EU) amounted to $212.1 billion, down from $223.7 billion in the previous year.
Japan’s ODA as a percentage of gross national income (GNI) was 0.39 percent (0.44 percent in the previous year), ranking 13th among DAC members.
