TOKYO: Japan will continue trade negotiations with the US keeping in mind the date of July 9 – the end of a suspension to the United States’ “reciprocal tariffs” – though it will set no deadline for talks, top trade negotiator AKAZAWA Ryosei said on Thursday.
“The 25% auto tariff is not something we can accept,” said Akazawa, Japan’s economy minister, repeating previous remarks to reporters before departing for Washington for a seventh round of trade talks with US counterparts.
Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru met US President Donald Trump on June 16 in Canada. They agreed to continue ministerial-level talks but did not reach a tariff deal.
