It is the first new Nissan vehicle to hit the domestic market since October 2017, excluding mini-vehicles, with engine displacements of up to 660 cc.

The Japanese automaker, whose domestic sales have remained sluggish due to the lack of new model releases, aims to revive its performance with the introduction of the Kicks, as well as other new vehicles.

Equipped with Nissan's unique hybrid technology, the Kicks features smooth acceleration and quiet driving. In addition to its futuristic exterior design, the Kicks offers roomy interior with ample space for passengers, and cutting-edge safety systems, carries sticker prices starting at 2,759,900 yen.

"Japan is an important market for us," Nissan Executive Vice President Asako Hoshino told an online press conference, adding that the company will continue to roll out "attractive vehicles."

Between fiscal 2020 and fiscal 2023, the company plans to release four hybrid models, including the Kicks, and two fully electric models in Japan, in a bid to further strengthen its competitiveness in the electrified vehicle market.

In fiscal 2019, which ended in March, Nissan placed fifth in the domestic automobile market, including minivehicles. Excluding mini-vehicles, the firm fell from second to third place, overtaken by Honda Motor Co. This was the first time that Nissan had lost it's place as second in four years.

Nissan President and Chief Executive Officer Makoto Uchida told a press conference in May that the company has been failing to meet expectations from its longtime customers due to a blank period of new model releases in Japan, as a result of its focus on global investment.
