TOKYO: Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said Monday that it will increase the proportion of electric and other electrified vehicles to 50 percent of its new car sales by 2030 from some 7 percent at present.

The major Japanese automaker set the target to meet stricter environmental regulations at home and aboard.

The electrified vehicles include hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars.

The company plans to release a plug-in hybrid model of its Eclipse Cross SUV in December. It will also launch an electric vehicle to be jointly developed with Nissan Motor Co.

Mitsubishi Motors also set a target of reducing carbon dioxide emissions per new vehicle by 40 percent by 2030 from the 2010 level.
