TOKYO: Some 85 Lawson Inc. convenience stores across Japan will close or shorten business hours during the year-end and New Year period, informed sources said Wednesday.
The company will allow store owners mainly in business districts to decide on when to close or shorten hours between Dec. 30 and Jan. 3.
Only a small number of Lawson outlets will close in residential areas where customer traffic is expected to grow as many supermarkets and restaurants close amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Lawson has so far allowed store owners to close depending on the situation. Between the end of 2019 and the beginning of this year, 102 stores closed in an experiment designed to address worker shortages.
