Japan’s benchmark power price hit a record high of 210.1 yen ($2.02) per kilowatt hour (kWh) as a cold snap continued amid tight supplies with generation units offline, Japan Electric Power Exchange data showed on Tuesday.
Prices on the exchange have hit successive records in recent days as demand for heating has risen, while utilities have struggled with getting enough units online and prices for fuel have also surged.
Japan’s utilities federation is calling for residents and businesses to conserve power, media reported on Monday, and last week the country’s energy regulator stepped up surveillance of the market.
