TOKYO: Sony Corp. said Wednesday that it will provide bonuses equivalent of seven months’ salary in fiscal 2021, which starts next month, a record high that exceeds the labor union’s demand for 6.9 months.
The Japanese company will also raise base monthly wages by over 2 percent on average.
The move comes as Sony is expected to report a record consolidated net profit of over 1 trillion yen for the year ending this month.
The company benefits from strong stay-at-home demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the box-office popularity of “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Infinity Train,” an anime film that it distributed jointly with Japanese studio Toho Co.
Sony is not part of unified wage talks in the Japanese electronics industry. The company does not regularly increase pay.
