NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., a unit of Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp., has resumed operations at three vehicle assembly plants in India, company officials told Jiji Press on Monday.
Two plants in Haryana and one plant in Gujarat had been idled since May 1 due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
The company has been diverting industrial oxygen for medical use, while workers have not been able to commute to plants due to COVID-19-related lockdowns.
Suzuki apparently had no choice but to resume plant operations as the Japanese automaker relies on India for more than half of its vehicle sales.
India saw new COVID-19 cases exceed 300,000 for 25 straight days since April 22. In some areas including New Delhi, new cases have been falling recently.
