
TOKYO: Subaru Corp. unveiled its new Solterra SUV, the Japanese automaker’s first mass-market electric vehicle, in Tokyo on Thursday.
The Solterra is slated to go on sale in markets including Japan, North America, Europe, China by around mid-2022.
Like Subaru’s other SUVs, the Solterra is equipped with a control system that enables stable driving even on rough roads.
The new vehicle has a range of some 530 kilometers on one charge for the front-wheel-drive version and about 460 kilometers for the four-wheel-drive type.
The price of the vehicle has not been announced.
The Solterra was built on an electric vehicle platform jointly developed with Toyota Motor Corp.
Toyota has already unveiled its new bZ4X electric vehicle, which was made on the platform.
Toyota will assemble the Solterra in Japan on behalf of Subaru as part of their partnership on electrified vehicles.
“We’ll basically work with Toyota” on electric vehicle development for the time being, Subaru President and CEO Tomomi Nakamura said at a press briefing.
