TOKYO: For the first time in 13 years, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency started on Monday recruiting new astronauts, who could include the first Japanese national to land on the moon surface.

The agency will accept applications until noon on March 4 next year via its website, selecting a limited number of people through screening tests and announcing the results of the selection in February 2023.

The recruitment comes after Japan pledged to participate in an international lunar exploration project.

To seek astronauts from a wide range of backgrounds, JAXA did not set education requirements this time. People need to have at least three years of work experience to apply, regardless of specialty and job category.
