Sales of new automobiles in Japan slumped 12.7 percent from a year earlier to 385,859 units in November, down for the second straight month, industry data showed on Monday.
The poor performance was attributed to the lasting adverse effects of a series of natural disasters in October, including huge Typhoon Hagibis, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association.
It is “too early to determine” whether the Oct. 1 consumption tax hike affected the auto sales figure, an official of the light vehicle association said.
The November total comprises 147,015 mini-vehicles, down 9.4 percent, and 238,844 others, down 14.6 pct. By automaker, only Daihatsu Motor Co. posted year-on-year sales growth in the reporting month.
