SOMPO Holdings announced it will start a demonstration experiment of a service that disables the driver's usage of a smartphone while driving a car. The experiment will run until March 2020, and the company plans to launch a full-fledged service for corporations, such as carriers, during the fiscal year.
The mechanism controls a smartphone with a device attached to the vehicle so that no operation is accepted when the vehicle moves at a speed of above 10 kmph. Control methods can be set individually for applications required for emergency calls to the police and fire department or for business.
The revised Road Traffic Law, which came into effect in Japan on the 1st of December, has strengthened penalties for driving while using smartphones.
