TOKYO: Toyota Motor Corp. said Monday that it will halt operations at all of its 14 plants in Japan on Tuesday, due to a system glitch at a supplier.

The Japanese automaker said that whether it will be able to resume operations on Wednesday has yet to be determined.

The system malfunction occurred at Kojima Industries Corp., a Japanese company that manufactures resin products. It has been hit by a cyberattack, a source familiar with the matter said.

Toyota currently expects the plant suspension to affect the production of around 13,000 vehicles, but it may be forced to drastically cut output depending on the situation. Its overseas production may also be affected.

Hino Motors Ltd., Toyota’s domestic truck unit, said it will suspend operations at two plants in Japan for the same reason. The company will also stop manufacturing all vehicles other than those supplied to Toyota.

On the possible cyberattack, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters that the government is currently looking into the matter.

The government had urged Japanese businesses to beef up their measures against cyberattacks on Wednesday, when Kishida announced the first set of Japanese sanctions against Russia over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
