DUBAI: Mitsubishi Power began operations at the Rades C power plant in Tunis City, Tunisia on Sept. 6. The highly efficient plant will be used to meet the country’s environmental goals, secure power supply, and substantially reduce the emission of CO2.

The plant was established by the Mitsubishi entity and partner Sumitomo Corporation to boost Tunisia’s capacity in generating and securing the power supply, and hence achieving sustainable economic prosperity.

A high efficiency gas and steam turbine, a heat recovery steam generator, an entire team of technical advisors, along with a long-term maintenance service agreement were provided to ensure the successful construction and initiation of the project.

The Rades C project is assumed to provide around 10% of Tunisia’s current installed capacity and ultimately become the most productive and efficient plant in the nation.

In the meeting with consortium members on Aug 26, Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas CEO Hichem Anene said: “Electricity is a cornerstone of economic development, and the Rades C power plant will play a key role in accelerating Tunisia’s growth for decades to come. We want to thank Mitsubishi Power and all consortium partners for this landmark project that will help us meet our energy demand today with reliable, clean and efficient power across the country, and aiming to facilitate our energy transition with industry-leading solutions and decarbonization technologies in Japan such as hydrogen, carbon capture and energy storage. We look forward to growing our partnership with Mitsubishi Power to support us in charting Tunisia’s path to a sustainable and decarbonized energy future.”

The Rades C was funded by the Japanese Official Development Assistant under the Japanese government’s “Partnership for Quality Infrastructure” initiative.

Employment opportunities arose with the development of the project by allocating Tunisian labor and capital resources resulting in the creation of around 70 permanent jobs and 2000 additional vacancies during the development and construction process.
