Tokyo: Retail gasoline prices in Japan rose for the first time in five weeks as of Monday after OPEC Plus, an oil producers’ group, agreed to reduce output substantially, the industry ministry said Wednesday.
The average retail price of regular gasoline rose 0.4 yen from a week earlier to 169.1 yen per liter, the ministry said.
The average rose in 30 of the country’s 47 prefectures, fell in 14 and stayed flat in three.
The highest average was 182.1 yen in Nagasaki.
Government subsidies paid to refineries in the week through Wednesday pushed down pump prices by 37.5 yen.
The subsidies will come to 37.8 yen per liter from Thursday.
The Oil Information Center predicts that the national average price will stay flat next week.
