
ABU DHABI: Baniyas Jiu-Jitsu Club surged ahead on the second day of Abu Dhabi’s Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship’s first round, hosted at Mubadala Arena in Zayed Sports City.
Saturday featured intense competitions as athletes in the kids’ categories and the U12, U14, and U16 girls’ divisions showcased deep technical prowess, amidst a lively atmosphere created by enthusiastic fans and families at the arena.
Scores of athletes from leading clubs and academies in the UAE took to the mats on Saturday, delivering outstanding performances aiming for gold medals in their respective divisions and points to lead in the championship’s first round.
Baniyas Jiu-Jitsu Club led the medal standings, with M.O.D UAE in second place and Al Jazira Jiu-Jitsu Club in third.
Mohamed Al Dhaheri, board member of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, said: “The championship showcases the true community spirit of our society, as evidenced by families coming together to support their children, helping them perform their best. The growing excitement for jiu-jitsu in the UAE reflects the wise leadership’s vision of empowering families and strengthening community bonds through sports.”
Hilal Al Kaabi, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, added: “We are delighted to see how well-organized the championship is and the impressive participation of athletes across different age groups. The passion for jiu-jitsu among children and parents is growing steadily, and the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation is making commendable efforts to expand the sport’s reach and popularity.”
With a large number of fans and families flocking to the arena, the championship also offered enjoyable activities for all ages, including video games, speed challenges, a photo booth, face painting, slime workshops, and crafts for kids. These activities made the event lively and enjoyable, offering something for everyone who attended to enjoy.
Nabeela Essay, mother of 8-year-old Taaliah Essay from Sharjah Self-Defense Sports Club in the 25 kg category, said: “My daughter holds a grey belt in jiu-jitsu, she’s passionate about the sport and dreams of winning numerous gold medals. The atmosphere at today’s competitions is fantastic, with many parents here supporting their children, fostering friendships, and enjoying fun times together. I’m really glad to be a part of this event.”
Noura Mubarak, mother of Maryam, Mazoon, Rawda, and Amer from Al Dhafra Club, said: “My children are deeply passionate about Jiu-Jitsu. I’ve witnessed the great benefits this sport brings, such as respect, commitment, discipline, determination, and sportsmanship, and I encourage all parents to support their children in practicing jiu-jitsu.”
