TOKYO: Japanese eyewear company JINS on Wednesday announced the release of its “JINS ASSIST” glasses that allow users to intuitively control digital devices with small head movements without using their hands.

The functionality is made by attaching the JINS ASSIST device to a pair of glasses and connecting it to a computer. The operation does not require large movements, and this helps to reduce fatigue.

In addition to basic mouse operations, various operations such as shortcut keys and scrolling are possible with the extended functions of the auxiliary software.

JINS says it received requests from people with disabilities and their families to help with mouse operations and digital devices so that communication could be made easier. JINS says the device helps bridge the “digital divide,” enabling non-technical people and people with disabilities to easily operate digital devices.

The wired device, which consists of a cable weighing 9 grams and the hardware weighing 4 grams, is compatible with software such as Windows or macOS and can be used with glasses not manufactured by JINS.

JINS carried out open tests with the participation of people with disabilities and improvements were made each time based on the feedback received. During the four-year development period, it was rebuilt from scratch about three times and the code size became 20 times larger than at the beginning of development.
