BRIGHTON: In the 65th minute of Monday’s game, Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma equalized against Liverpool with a goal that not only leveled the score but also made him the first Japanese player to score 10 goals in a Premier League season, according to Kyodo News.
After just four minutes of the footballer on the field, with Brighton still trailing, Mitoma masterfully converted teammate Danny Welbeck’s initial shot into a record-breaking goal.
To seal the victory, Mitoma set up an impressive 85th-minute winning goal for fellow substitute Jack Hinshelwood later in the match.
“It was our last home game of the season, and we needed a win,” Mitoma told Kyodo News. “I was aiming higher in terms of the number of goals—this is the minimum.”
While Mitoma is the first Japanese player to achieve this milestone in the Premier League, he is the fourth to do so across Europe’s top leagues. Reims’ Keito Nakamura scored 11 goals in France’s Ligue 1, Holstein Kiel’s Shuto Machino matched that tally in Germany’s Bundesliga 2, and Freiburg’s Ritsu Doan netted 10 in the Bundesliga.
