DUBAI: Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) President Mohammed Ben Sulayem is set to visit Japan this week on a high-level mission aimed at highlighting the country’s vital role in shaping the future of global mobility innovation and the continued expansion of motorsport.
The visit underscores the strategic importance Japan holds for the FIA, which serves as the global governing body for motorsport and the federation for mobility organizations worldwide.
It also reaffirms the FIA’s commitment to collaboration with governments, Original Equipment Manufacturers, national sporting authorities, and mobility clubs to foster sustainable mobility solutions and inclusive motorsport development.

In motorsport, Japan has witnessed a surge in participation and popularity. The Japan Automobile Federation recently reported more than 200,000 licensed drivers active in motorsport, marking a 20% increase over the past five years. This year’s Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka recorded its highest attendance since 2006.
Ben Sulayem’s itinerary includes meetings with key Japanese officials, such as Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru, Japan Sports Agency Commissioner MUROFUSHI Koji, and NAKANO Hiromasa, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
He will also visit major motorsport infrastructure sites, including the City Circuit and JAF Control Tower, in a tour hosted by the JAF.
“Japan continues to be a beacon of technological leadership in the automotive sector, motorsport passion, and innovative mobility solutions which improve people’s quality of life,” said Ben Sulayem ahead of his visit. “This visit is an opportunity to strengthen our ties and align our shared goals that can benefit the global community.”
He added that the visit reflects the FIA’s broader vision of driving progress in innovation, safety, and sustainability across mobility and motorsport.
“With its powerful combination of industrial strength, governmental commitment, and rich sporting heritage, Japan stands as a key partner in realising these global objectives,” he said.
Ben Sulayem’s visit is part of the FIA’s ongoing efforts to promote accessible and sustainable innovation in mobility and motorsport, leveraging partnerships with global leaders like Japan to accelerate progress for all.
