DUBAI: One of Japan’s most popular convenience stores Lawson announced on Monday that it will begin renting out parking spaces near its stores, allowing visitors to car camp overnight.

Lawson said visitors would be able to rent a space at the car campsite for ¥2,500 ($17) to ¥3,000 ($21) per night, as more tourists are set to arrive in Japan.

Campers will be able to reserve and pay online and upon arrival, they can check in at the store, where they would also be able to rent power cord reels as well as use the bathroom.

Initially, the service will begin July 14 at six stores in Chiba Prefecture and will slowly be rolled out at other locations. Lawson said it wants to target more rural areas where public bath houses are nearby, but not hotels or other accommodations.

Lawson will allow each visitor to book a block of two adjacent parking spaces at a time, which would accommodate regular cars and recreational vehicles.

Parking rules at the campsite will follow the same guidelines set by the Japan Recreational Vehicle Association at RV parks.

There are over 14,500 Lawson outlets across the country, giving tourists alternatives to conventional accommodation.
