Crickets are not the first ingredient that comes to mind when crackers are mentioned. However, Japanese retail company MUJI recently introduced cricket rice crackers to its snack line.

The new product is part of an initiative to create more sustainable snack options for to address the issue of the limited resources on planet earth as the world population continues to grow.

Insects have come up as economically beneficial alternatives in terms of food shortages. They also happen to pack a lot of nutritional value, especially high protein content.

The cricket rice cracker recipe was created in collaboration with Tokushima University. It includes powdered crickets kneaded into the cracker’s mix.

Crickets have a flavor similar to shrimp, according to MUJI, which is why the recipe was kept simple.
