Japanese convenience store Lawson is putting its own twist on the ichigo sando, also known as a fruit sando.

Lawson has integrated matcha into the popular Japanese snack, by offering matcha flavoured bread in replacement of standard white bread.

The fruit sando has been a popular part of Japanese culinary culture dating back to 1869, in Kyoto.

Like most, Lawson uses the three primary ingredients present in most fruit sandos in Japan: whipped cream, condensed milk, and fruit but have reinvented it by combining the flavours and textures of the cream and strawberries with the bitterness of the matcha.

This new treat, amounts to approximately 218 Kcal, and will be priced at 368 yen—slightly higher than the convenience store’s standard fruit sando sold for ¥348.

The matcha used is sourced from Uji in Kyoto prefecture, also regarded as the home of green tea.

Lawson has a generous selection of sandwiches, and have just released a Melty Tamago Toast Sandwich made using scrambled eggs, cheese and barbeque sauce.
