US company Blue Bottle Coffee will be offering cake with coffee purchases in Japan starting April 1 following a collaboration with Japanese Castella cake specialist Bunmeido.
Castella or Kasutera, a Japanese wagashi—otherwise known as traditional Japanese confections—are a popular honey sponge cake made using bread flour, sugar, eggs and honey. Both the flavour, in tandem with the moist and smooth texture of it, make this a popular delicacy in Japan.
Bunmeido, was founded in 1990 and have utilized a 100-year-old recipe to make their famous cakes.
Aside from their traditional Castella cakes, Bunmeido also makes variations using flavours like peach.
The name of the cake has Portuguese roots, stemming from the presence of foreign sellers based in Nagasaki during the 16th Century.
Offering quality coffee to customers since 2002, Blue Bottle Coffee’s fundamental mission is to offer a solution for brewing coffee to order using, what they term as ‘the pour over method.’
“The ritual of the pour over is like a meditation: There’s no machine in your way, no flashing green lights, no electric power cords. Just you and a few simple tools,” their website states.
The company is now enhancing the experience by offering cakes to complement their rich flavoured coffee.
