TOKYO: A self-driving bus that patrolled the Tokyo Paralympic Village collided with a visually impaired player on Thursday, leaving the athlete injured, Tokyo Metropolitan Police said.
The accident occurred at around 2 in the afternoon at the Paralympic Athletes’ Village in Tokyo when a self-driving patrol bus was about to turn at an intersection. It hit a men’s judo representative from Japan, Aramitsu Kitazono, who was on the pedestrian crossing.
Kitazono fell and injured his head. His injuries will take two weeks to recover.
The bus moves around the Olympic Village by automatic driving, but at that time there were two operators on board. They said that they were late in noticing the athlete.
Kitazono was scheduled to participate in the men’s 81-kg class judo on August 28.
