KANAZAWA, Japan: A souvenir shop in the provincial city of Kanazawa is offering soft serve ice cream in gold foil.

Most of Japan’s gold foil is produced in Kanazawa City in Central Japan, but the city is also known for its ice cream consumption, which is amongst the highest in the country– now, the area is combining its two main products. Gold foil is also used in the making of drinks, cosmetics, pens, glasses and souvenirs.

The gold-covered ice cream is priced at 891 yen to reflect the company name Hakuichi, also read as 8-9-1 (ha-ku-ichi).

Soft ice cream sprinkled with gold powder was sold in Kanazawa before, but now it’s wrapped in gold foil, which makes it unique.

Another interesting element is the method of applying the extremely thin and fragile gold leaf onto the ice cream using special bamboo chopsticks.

Initially, the ice cream was sold as a limited edition of 1,000 items to commemorate the opening of Kanazawa Shinkansen. However, its popularity exceeded expectation resulting in a more permanent spot on the menu.
