A huge thousand-year-old volcanic rock known as the Sessho-seki or “killing stone” located in Mount Nasu in Japan has unleashed predictions of dark forces being released into the world after it was found split in two by a visitor on Monday.

Legend has it that the rock is capable of killing anyone that comes into contact with it and has a demon inside it.

According to Japanese mythology surrounding Sessho-seki, the rock contains the transformed corpse of Tamamo-no-Mae, a beautiful woman who had been exposed as an evil nine-tailed fox that was part of a secret plan by a warlord to kill Emperor Toba, who reigned from 1107-1123, and take his throne.

The separation of the rock into two almost equal parts, which is predicted to have occurred sometime this week, has sparked beliefs and instigated fear on social media, regarding the consequences of the event. This has been further fueled by pictures being posted of a rope that was tied around the circumference of the rock being found on the ground.

“I came alone to Sesshoseki, where the legend of the nine-tailed fox remains. The big rock wrapped with a rope in the middle, is where it was supposed to be, but it broke in half and the rope fell off…I feel like I saw something that shouldn’t be seen,” said a Twitter user in a post that has attracted almost 185,000 likes.

One users pointed out that the breaking of the rock signals a disaster, mentioning how it coincides with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. While others joked that after the numerous chaotic events that have taken place throughout the years, the release of an evil spirit into the world “sounds like nothing.”

Although Japanese media had mentioned that the stone had developed cracks years ago, which probably allowed water to enter the rock, deteriorate its internal structure and cause it to break apart, other users online have continued questionwhether the occurrence indicated the resurrection Tamamo-no-Mae’s demon spirit.
