TOKYO: Veteran Japan fullback NAGATOMO Yuto paid a courtesy visit to Tokyo Governor KOIKE Yuriko at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building on Thursday following the Japan team’s return from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
KOIKE said she was impressed with the performance of the national team, who reached the Round of 16 after historic wins over Germany and Spain. Koike said all Japanese people encouraged the national team even though the qualifying group was difficult.
Nagatomo said he felt the “spirit of Japan” during the World Cup and he tried to lead his team as best he could.
The Governor and Nagatomo unveiled Japan and Tokyo FC team shirts displaying the player’s number (5) on the back.
Nagatomo, 36, said he has no intention of retiring but planned to take a rest before resuming the season at Tokyo Football Club. He previously played for Inter Milan, Olympique de Marseille and Turkish club Galatasaray SK.
